building Green Place Studios
co-founded with Annika. we signed the lease on a derelict hundred-year-old warehouse in Lower Clapton, Hackney. the estate agent called it "characterful". we called it a building site.
what looked like a one-month paint job turned into six months of renovation. ripping out walls, rewiring electrics, fighting with plumbing that hadn't been touched since the 1920s. we did most of it ourselves because the budget said we had to.
now it's two 900 square foot spaces. the Loft upstairs and the Basement below. proper lighting rigs, soundproofing, the works. but the point was never just to build a hire studio. anyone can do that.
we wanted a home for community. events, workshops, a place where people could come and make things without feeling like they needed permission. Annika's vision from the start was to create the space she didn't have growing up. somewhere that said yes before it said no.
it's still growing. every month it becomes more of what we imagined and a bit of what we didn't. that's the best part.
