about

i grew up in Lincolnshire. there's not a lot to do there so you have to create your own entertainment. i started making little horror films at about 11 when a friend got a video camera. that was it really.

worked on a cow farm for a while, saved money, started a fake music blog to blag my way into shows and it actually worked. got my professional start as a runner on grime shoots with Skepta, Wiley, Giggs. that's how i learned how sets actually work. moved near London at 20 and found Nine8 Collective. met Biig Piig in the smoking area of a club they were performing at. she had a few hundred plays on SoundCloud. we made the 24K video for £200 with some borrowed Danny Boyle equipment and it just went from there.

spent years after that directing music videos and creative campaigns for Raye, D Block Europe, Nothing But Thieves, JME, Becky Hill, Knucks, Fly Anakin and a bunch of others across Universal, Sony and Warp. Prada went double platinum. won a uk music video award in 2023. creative directed the Nothing But Thieves world tour. it was a good run and it taught me everything about editing, rhythm, and how to tell a story in three minutes.

these days i'm more interested in documentary work and building things. i co-founded EditAssist with james, an intelligent editing engine built to understand not just what's in the footage but why a cut feels right. and with annika i run Green Place Studios in hackney, which we converted from a derelict 100-year-old warehouse into two 900 sq ft studio spaces. it nearly killed us but it was worth it.

how i think

editing informs everything. when i'm directing i'm already cutting the film in my head. i know what i need for the edit before i call action. that's my superpower if i have one. i'm not a dump-truck director. i distill the idea down to its core and if the performance is strong i don't drown it.

i use technology to tell stories, not to show off. the 360 camera hack on Class Clown, the VFX nose on Eton Mess, pre-vizzing effects faster than storyboarding. new tools should open up new stories. if it feels like a gimmick it's wrong.

i want to make work that teaches people something, shows them possibilities they didn't think existed, and leads with love. that sounds cheesy written down but it's true.
